Our book club members, sponsored by the library, had a special treat this week. They had a video chat with Joelle Charbonneau, author of The Testing, as well as other mystery books. The students and Mrs. Stiles asked her many questions about her books and the writing process as well as fun facts about herself.

This year, Canyon Vista participated as a school in the Hour of Code. Hour of Code is a grass roots movement trying to get more children interested in learning computer science. Many web sites and apps were provided to give a taste of logic necessary for programming. Some of them included high-level visual programming tools that allow for snapping blocks of code together - similar to building blocks that children are already familiar with. Teachers provided time during advisory classes for students to try coding. It may spark a student to become more involved in working with computers. They are already a part of everyday life; it's important that students learn a little about how they work.
Teachers, as well as students, tried their hand at programming.
In addition, the programming club students conducted a video chat with the chief operating officer of Facebook after school. She expressed that they continue learning to code as who knows what future job skills would be necessary. Click here to read the district write-up about our chat.
Corey Ryan, our district media specialist, recorded this video of the students programming in GameSalad and asked about their thoughts of coding.
